The first and most obvious place to check for the recommended tire pressure is on the tire itself. You can usually find this on the side of the tire, typically below the manufacturer's logo. It will say something along the lines of "Max.Pressure 30 PSI."

However, it's worth noting that this is typically the maximum allowable pressure - not the pressure that is necessarily the best for your vehicle.

It's a good idea to check your tire pressure frequently. If you notice that there is always a substantial pressure drop, inspect the tire for leaks and possibly replace them. Checking them once a month is a good idea, but consider checking the pressure each time you're fueling up at the gas station. Additionally, before you go on a road trip or any long drive, make sure your tires are aired up.

It's also worth noting that not every car has 4 identical tires. This means it is possible that you need different tire pressures for the front and back. Again, consult your owner manual for specific details.

For example, the right front tire should rotate to the right rear position, and the left rear tire should go to the right front position.

Rear-wheel drive vehicles. For rear-wheel drive vehicles, the process is similar to the rotation pattern for front-wheel drive vehicles but inverted. Take the rear tires and place them in the front position on the same side. Then, take the front tires and place them on the opposite side in the rear position. In such a scenario, you obviously can't rotate the rear tires to the front position or vice versa, so turning your tires might not be possible.

Some high-performance tires are unidirectional, meaning they are only designed to spin in one direction. These tires cannot be rotated simply by moving the wheels; instead, they must first be taken off of the rotation entirely and placed back on in the correct orientation.

If you're uncertain whether your vehicle is front, rear, or all-wheel drive, consult your owner's manual for clarification. While rotating your tires is certainly something you can do at home, it's always best to consult a professional shop if you have any questions or concerns about the process.

Either way, to get the most out of your tires, it is recommended that you rotate them every 3000-5000 miles or every six months. An excellent way to remember this is to rotate them whenever you change your oil.

Now you have to call a tow truck, spend a ½ day waiting around, and it might just cost hundreds of dollars on top of that. You might be thinking, hmmm, I better check my spare tire next time I hit the gas station, and yes, we encourage you to check all of your tires regularly, even though we hope to never need it; you never know. - One idea to keep on top of this is to set a reminder on your calendar.

Oil changes

Yep, you know it, clean oil is important to your car, and it will keep you on the road for longer without unnecessary trouble. Your engine oil performs many functions, filtration, cooling, and lubrication for all of those fast-moving metal parts that keep us motating. Bear Mountain is an excellent place to learn how to ski or snowboard. With 27 fantastic trails on the slope and only 2 hours from Los Angeles, this snow adventure with an elevation drop of 1,700 feet and 8,800-foot peaks, you are sure to get some good runs no matter your skill level.

Snow Summit

With over 18 miles of skiing, Snow Summit is an idea for experienced skiers looking to get long stretches of powder under their sticks. The longest run in Snow summer is one ¼ mile long and has an elevation drop of 1,000 feet. Snow Summit is designed for skiers; however, Snowboarders and tubers also have a good time on the slopes.

Snow Valley

With 28 runs, Snow Valley is a smile maker for all levels of snow lovers, from beginners to expert-level. The longest ski run is about a mile long, and the peak is about 7,900 feet high, with 12 ski lifts to take you where you want to go; from December through April, you are sure to have the time of your lives in the snow only two hours east of LA.

Pinos

Located in Los Padres National Forest near Ventura, Mt. Pinos is excellent for both beginners and expert skiers and even offers back-country experiences. If you love skiing, try Condor Summit Road Slope for challenging and rugged terrain. There are many slopes to choose from, no matter your skill level, and it welcomes Snowboarders, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and inter-tubes alike and is only about 2 hours from LA.

Baldy

Only 20 miles from Los Angeles, Mt. Baldy is nearby and has over $4,000 acres of trails to explore. No matter your skill level, the four lifts at the top of the trails will give you a smile as you head down the slopes, no matter if you are on a snowboard, skis, or inter-tubers. The trails at Mt. Baldy are waiting for you!

Mountain High

Angeles National Forest hosts Mountain High Ski Resort, which offers both natural snow and created show for the slopes. There are challenging slopes for every skill level at Mountain High. Inspect the AC

AC and summertime in California are synonymous. When the summertime heat hits, we want our AC system working without a struggle, so testing it is an important step in keeping ahead of the curve.

When you turn on your ac and have hot air blowing, it could mean that you need a Freon charge. This is the refrigerant your system is pressurized with. Topping off your system can be the boost you need; however, there could also be something else going on with your AC system that one of our trusty ASE-certified auto mechanics can diagnose and repair.

Check your tires' air pressure

After a long winter, wintertime wear and tear is likely on your tires. Be sure to check your air pressure and check for signs of irregular wear on your tires from under or overinflation. The most common air pressure is set between 30 & 35 PSI (pounds per square inch). You can always check your owner's manual for optimal air pressure for your vehicle.

When your tires are properly inflated, it helps to maximize fuel economy and prevent flat tires or, worse, a blowout.

Be sure to pop the trunk and ensure your spare tire is properly inflated while you are at it. It will provide peace of mind in case of an emergency.

Top off engine fluids

How many people in your inner circle know CPR? Do you know? It’s been researched and discovered that, sadly, 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency. This feeling of helplessness is due to improper training or a complete lack of it. This alarming statistic hit’s very close to home- “because home is where 88 percent of cardiac arrests occur.” - CPR.BLOG . Our team at Walt’s Auto Service wants to highlight an event dedicated to changing this significant and deadly statistic for the better. Our shop and crew are close to this organization because its founder is one of our employees’ sons, which we will get to later. Introducing the Heartshield Project. “ The Heartshield Project is a non-profit organization with a mission to save lives through education about Sudden Cardiac Arrest, SCA, its risk factors, and the importance of CPR/AED training.”

“ Heartshield Project was founded after Austin McAnena collapsed and suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) from an undetected heart condition at the young age of 27. With a 10% chance of surviving, Austin was saved by a Good Samaritan who went out of his way to perform CPR and save his life. Austin’s heart condition went undetected like many others, with 1 in 300 youth at risk. Heartshield Project was founded to spread awareness for SCA, promote heart screenings, and provide CPR/AED training.”

This fantastic organization has rallied its efforts and resources to create the 2nd Annual Heartshield Project Golf Tournament. This event will take place on Friday, October 14th, 2022, at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club - Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.

When speaking to the Director of the golf tournament Mathew, it was apparent that this course was chosen for a special reason for the Heartshield Project. Accessibility: The Heartshield project team wants to make their annual fundraiser affordable and accessible to everyone. “The event is accessible to nearly everyone” - Mathew Turcutto. For a total cost of $150, this is a cost-effective charity golf event held just thirty minutes from Orange County. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for The Heart Shield Project. Last year there were an impressive 160 participants, and they hope to grow by at least 25% this year. You can even turn this into a family event as the dinner portion is kid-friendly.

A different organization sponsors each hole in the course, and fun facts are placed around the course to give surprising and interesting facts about CPR. While golfers are waiting for their turn to Tee-Off, there is also personal CPR training hosted by professionals while you wait for your turn!

“The event is more than a fundraiser; it is an educational event; we are getting in front of a variety of people, doctors, medical device companies and salespeople, financial and real estate industries, all the way down to barbershop owners. We aim to get the message out to as many people as possible through the HeartShield Project.” - Mathew Turcutto .

Speaking to Austin McAnena, the founder of the Heartshield Project, we find it amazing the work that he accomplished after his Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The foundation recently donated an automated external defibrillator AED to a local charter school that did not have one. McAnena was a D1 soccer athlete who lived a healthy life. Matthew notes how many athletes have heart conditions. This impressive organization highlights how these heart conditions can affect even the fittest humans. Two years ago, Austin was out jogging and went into sudden cardiac arrest on the side of the road. If it weren’t for the innocent bystander who pulled his car over to give him compressions, he wouldn’t be here with us today. The Heartshield Project is passionate about teaching everyone the importance of knowing CPR. Being located entirely within the Los Angeles city limits, Topanga State Park is considered the world's largest wildland within the boundaries of a major city. Cachuma Lake Under three hours away from our location is a hidden California gem. Set amidst acres of wilderness flanked by the picturesque Santa Ynez and San Rafael Mountains lies Cachuma Lake. The County entered into a long-term lease with the Federal Bureau of Reclamation in 1953 to manage the 9,000-acre Cachuma Lake Recreation Area. When driving to Cachuma Lake, you will be taking the scenic Highway 154 in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Apache Creek Wilderness: Established in 1984, this 5,628-acre wilderness features three natural springs and several important riparian areas, including Apache Creek. These natural springs are a perfect way to cool off in the Calirinfina climate & bring a great day of wildlife with them. People have spotted numerous bird species and mountain lions patrolling the rolling hills.

Joshua Tree This world-famous park lies at an ecological crossroads-the high Mojave Desert meeting with the low Colorado Desert. This park offers attractions for all ages. Joshua Tree is known for its enormous climbable rocks, which are very intriguing to kids & Joshua Tree provides a natural playground full of them! More experienced climbers can explore more than 400 climbing formations and 8,000 established climbing routes.

Below are our tips and tricks to extend their lifetimes & to know when it’s time for a fresh pair- especially as we head into the winter/rainier months.

How to Extend Windshield Wipers lifespan

Wipe - As you can imagine, in the fall/winter weather, we have an increase in dirt, leaves & other debris that can easily attach themselves to your blades & under the wipers themselves. If left for long periods, that grime begins to harm your windshield & your blade’s lifetime. By running a clean cloth along with your wiper blades & in the inner channels, you are taking a simple step to keep your wipers at maximum efficiency. Perhaps once a month (or every few), create a reminder on your phone! Only take a few moments, and it is something you can do as your vehicle warms up.

Use a Rubber Protectant - Using a rubber protectant after cleaning can extend the life of the wiper blade & create a smoother wipe. An excellent hack is first to clean your blade with some vinegar. Then use a rubber protectant and rub it into the entire edge with a clean cloth. This helps keep the rubber ‘hydrated’ and less prone to cracking. Overall a great step to make your blades last!

Wash Your Vehicle - By washing the exterior of your vehicle, you are also improving the life of your windshield wiper blades! By clearing away debris & muck from your car, you clear potential buildup.

Anyone who is a dog owner knows just how important your furry friend is and that they are a member of your family. This means your beloved pet will most likely travel with you in your vehicle at some point in its life, whether it be to the vet, the dog park, or a friend's house. We, at Walt's Auto Service are animal lovers too, and we want to discuss the dangers when a pet is left inside your parked vehicle.

Did you know that thousands of pets are injured or die each year due to auto accidents? According to Pet Pro Supply Company ", 84% of dog owners traveling with their dogs are not restraining them. Only 16% of people who transport their dogs use proper safety restraints & 60% of dog owners have driven while distracted by their pets as passengers." We take many risks when traveling with our animals & the dangers that we open up to them if we leave them in our vehicles. It seems as if videos of concerned pedestrians calling the police to have them break into a locked car with an animal inside are increasing, especially in these summer months. There's no better than the hot month of August to discuss three pet safety tips and tricks in your vehicle for your pet.

1. Buckle Them Up: Even for just a quick ride, you should always buckle your dog into a seatbelt restraint. Proper restraints and harnesses are essential to ensure the safety of your dog and anyone else in your vehicle. The chaos that could ensue from a loose pet crawling in the footwell or causing distracted driving is deadly. If you have an animal in the vehicle moving about, you will be more distracted than if they weren't in the vehicle with you. By having them in a safety harness, their movement around the interior of your vehicle is limited. With these limitations, you ensure more safety and fewer distractions for yourself & everyone on the road around you.

2. The Backseat is Better: We know that many of us feel comforted when we have our pets in our laps at home; however, we often don't think about the risks we pose to our pets when we have them with us. Many pets (especially smaller ones) wouldn't survive the airbag releasing if an accident happened. Keeping them in the backseat is the safest place for them to be. By having your animal on your lap, you are also endangering yourself. If an accident were to occur, the airbag wouldn't be able to do its complete job with a pet in the middle.

3. Never Leave Them Alone: The American Veterinary Medical Association has stated that "every year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles. Given the hot summer months, it's not safe to even leave your pet in your vehicle for 6 minutes. An organization called "It Only Takes 6 Minutes For A Dog To Die In A Hot Car" explains the dangers of leaving one's pet inside. In the summer, heat, especially temperatures in vehicles, can rise within minutes, creating a toxic and deadly environment for any animal inside. An independent study showed that the interior temperature of vehicles parked in outside temperatures ranging from 72 to 96º F rose steadily as time increased.

What a milestone it is in life to learn how to drive for the first time! Do you recall your parents taking me to a local church parking lot (large and empty) and getting behind the wheel for the first time? While it is a joy and a newfound sense of freedom to have a vehicle for the first time, it's also a huge responsibility. Once the driving test is passed (hopefully the first time), it seems all the teen wants and thinks about is "my first car." If you decide the timing is right to purchase a vehicle, it's your job to make sure you are a prepared parent and teacher and your new driver is feeling confident behind the wheel. At Walt's Auto Service, we wanted to put together a small guide to help ease this huge transition!

Double Checking Safety: If you purchase a used or brand new car for your new driver, ensure by bringing the vehicle into Walt’s Auto Service for a Pre-Purchase Inspection that, at the very least, the first car comes standard with electronic stability control, anti-lock braking systems, and traction control. Another great thing to check for is adequate coverage with airbags. One can also access the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website to check for car safety ratings. This Institute evaluates two aspects of safety: "crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — and crash avoidance and mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity."

When first getting a license, there are rules not allowing teens to drive with anyone other than a family member for six months when they first get their license (some states have laws implemented about this specifically). It's your call, but let it be known and let it be clear. Texting and driving should be avoided at all costs, especially since both are illegal in many states . Stress the importance of following laws, such as speed limits and seat belts!

Finally, Every child is different. Some kids are responsible enough to run their own business, while others are barely responsible enough to mind their own business. But when it comes to driving for the first time, you can never be too cautious with your precious cargo behind the wheel.

Checking the Oil

Our cars have become so reliable these days that we simply forget to do simple maintenance such as checking the oil levels between services. Not to mention that it is much harder to find a place that can or will do a simple under hood check for you. The responsibility of checking the oil then falls to the car owner.

To do so, it is first necessary to shut off the engine and open the hood. Finding the dipstick is a simple matter of locating a looped wire or plastic handle (often painted red or yellow) on the side of the engine. The dipstick should be removed, cleaned off with a cloth, and reinserted into the engine. After it is pulled out once more, the dipstick should be observed to note the oil level. If the level shows between the “add” and the “full” markings at the end of the stick it is ﬁne. If the oil level is below the “add” mark sufficient oil should be added to reach the “full” line.

Checking your oil every fourth time you ﬁll up is a good idea, because if you are losing oil, you don’t want to wait to get the problem fixed.

Found Walt’s Auto Service when I was looking for a different auto repair shop for my 1990 Honda CRX SI, a long time ago. The independent Honda repair shop where I had been a customer for many years changed owners and it was time to move on.

I’ve been a customer at Walt’s Auto Service for……..what must be going into a second decade by now. I first found them on a “Top 10” list in Auto Club’s Westways Magazine of auto repair shops in Southern California. Then I began to notice that they made the “Daily Breeze’s South Bay’s Best” awards list year after year.

Hondas and Toyotas (and their associated makes) are what Walt’s primarily repairs, but they are certainly perfectly able to diagnose and repair other makes as well.

I took my 1990 Honda CRX SI to Walt’s for many years until I gave it up in 2010, and now my 2010 Honda Accord is there for every oil change, service…..whatever it needs.

At my very first Walt’s visit, I liked how I could see AND watch (if I chose) my car being attended to, simply by standing in the customer parking area. All nine bays are visible. At Walt’s, the standard is integrity, thorough inspections, industry-standard pricing (or better), Genuine Honda/Toyota parts and same day service is the “norm” (with rare exceptions).

This small, very personal staff has never disappointed. Kay, the owner and manager, is at the shop everyday and interacts with every customer. Paul, the ASE Certified Service Consultant and ASE Master Technician, will always explain and show everything on the car that is an issue, without even having to ask him. (He knows I will look up parts online on my own otherwise). I ask for these “teaching moments” and Paul always “makes time” to be sure that every customer is satisfied with the work when they drive away. He shows me the old, busted parts that came off my car, even if he has to scrape up the remains off the floor (and he has).

Paul will always tell a customer “the whole situation”. He never insists that any particular repair must be done immediately; unless, of course, there is a clear and/or catastrophic failure with a part, system, etc.

If a repair or part replacement doesn’t HAVE to be done today, Paul might say, “I would take care of (name a repair) within the next ‘x’ number of miles”….. or “Honda recommends that (name a part) be replaced every ‘x’ number of miles”, but it is always YOUR choice, without any pressure.

You will NOT find “upselling” at Walt’s Auto Service. A car owner’s OWN prior neglect of their automobile is certainly not to be blamed on ANY repair shop. Any “unexpected” repairs brought to your attention at Walt’s are simply a testament to the thoroughness of their highly-experienced technicians’ inspections.

As far as who “works the magic” in the service bays, Walt’s employs two technicians, Francisco and Randy. Francisco is a fully certified ASE Service Technician/Specialist and has been servicing cars at Walt’s for at least two decades, I believe, and Randy has been there for many, many years as well. Talk about technicians that know EVERY one of their customer’s cars….. inside and out.

If my car was ever stuck out in the desert or anywhere else with a major problem, I would have it towed to Walt’s Auto Service in Torrance without a second thought.

Drive Green – Recognize that how your drive has a lot to do with fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Jerky and aggressive driving decreases your miles per gallon (MPG) and increases wear and tear on your vehicle. Minimize unnecessary miles by combining errands in one trip.

Get a Tune-Up – Regular tune-ups, maintenance and having clean air filters will help your car pollute less and burn less gas. With a proper tune-up, you can save 4% on the cost of gas and up to 40% by replacing a faulty oxygen sensor. Simply changing the car’s air filter can improve efficiency by 10%.

Lighten the Load – Get the junk out of the trunk and the stuff out of your car, with the exception of emergency items such as a spare tire, flares and a first-aid kit. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage.

Tire Checks – According to the Car Care Council, around two billion gallons of gas each year could be saved if the tires on every American’s car were properly inflated. Optimal tire pressure for your vehicle is listed in the owner’s manual. Tires that are not properly inflated add rolling resistance that makes the engine work harder to move the vehicle. All of this increases fuel costs as much as three to five cents per gallon, and increases the risk of engine damage.

Gas Caps and Fill-Ups – Check your vehicle’s gas cap. Approximately 17 percent of vehicles on the road have loose, damaged or missing gas caps, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year. Topping off your gas tank when filling up your car can also release harmful vapors into the environment.

Spotting Fluid Leaks

When was the first time you took a close look at your garage floor or the patch of driveway beneath your car in an effort to spot a fluid leak? This type of informal inspection should be conducted on almost a daily basis. Conscientious car owners who frequently spot check for leaks will more likely be rewarded with a minor repair bill, rather than the more costly complication of fluid loss.

A puddle of greenish-yellow or reddish fluid is indicative of loss of engine coolant. Motor oil is usually blackish-brown, while transmission fluid has a red tint. Brake fluid is clear, but its location near the wheels may help identify it. These fluids are all considered to be lubricants, the loss of which compromise a corresponding unit’s functioning efficiency and should be checked out right away.

Warning Lights

HINT: When the check engine warning light comes on, check the owner’s manual for specific instructions.

Because yellow “check engine” warning lights often show up on the instrument panel unaccompanied by any apparent symptoms, drivers may continue to drive their vehicle and blame the incident on glitches in the system. However, this should be examined by an auto technician at the earliest opportunity. The reason is the car’s onboard computer system receives information about the engine and other parts of the car from an array of sensors. If any of these sensors relay information about an abnormality, the “check engine” light will come on and the car computer can compensate.

The point is not to ignore the warning to the point where failure develops. Those little lights really do mean something, even if it only means there’s a loose connection somewhere. Don’t be in the dark.

Up Front with the CV Joints

Anyone who drives a front wheel or an all wheel drive automobile should be familiar with the function of CV (constant velocity) Joints. Their function is to provide power transfer to the front wheels as well as to allow for steering and suspension movement.

Packed in grease and protected with rubber boots, the CV joints should be regularly inspected for leaks and cracks. In the event that the boots deteriorate and begin to leak grease, they will splatter grease on the inside of the wheel and on the suspension. Evidence of this splattering will not be obvious from the outside of the vehicle and must be viewed from underneath.

For this reason, it is a good idea to have the CV joints inspected at every oil change or 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Replacing a boot immediately after a leak or crack is found costs a fraction of what it would otherwise cost to replace a CV joint or a complete drive axle. If you hear a repetitive knocking or grinding noise from your car the likelihood is that something is wrong with your CV joints, brakes, or wheels. The sound of popping or clicking noises when turning or a clunk while accelerating may be indicative of the need of a new CV joint in a front wheel drive car.
